Change to Scoring System for 2012

The scoring system used by the Midland Speed Championship for many years has been based on the idea that the second placed driver in a class will be a driver of a good standard who's time will represent a good target time for that class.  Points scoring has been based on time difference between a driver's time and the time of the second placed driver.  This has worked well in the past, but with the reduced number of competitors in the last two years, a driver's score at any given event has become dependent on who else has chosen to compete in the same class at that event.  This is not really what we want.

On the other hand, the scoring system is part of the character of this particular championship and we don't want to change it completely.  So we have decided to make some changes to the scoring system:

  • The winner of a class will score 20 points regardless of the number of competitors in the class on the day.
  • Lower placed drivers will score 20 points minus their time difference to the winner.
  • Any competitor who is within 2% of the target time will score a bonus point.
  • Any competitor who beats the target time will score a bonus of 1 point plus the time difference between their time and the target time.

The precise wording of the new scoring rules can be see in this Extract of the 2012 Regulations.
